Netflix is expanding its franchise era with the development of a new spinoff series based on the hit show Wednesday, along with two reported spinoffs of the acclaimed series Peaky Blinders.
Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ Spinoff Series
According to a Bloomberg report, Netflix is in talks to create a spinoff series for Wednesday, the popular show starring Jenna Ortega as a college-aged Wednesday Addams. The spinoff will revolve around the character of Uncle Fester, played by Fred Armisen in the first season of Wednesday. While the project is still in its early stages, Netflix is eager to establish a pipeline of Addams Family programs to build off the success of Wednesday.
Wednesday’s Season 2 and Uncle Fester Series
Following the resounding success of its first season, Wednesday was renewed for a second season, scheduled to start filming in April 2024 in Ireland. The untitled Uncle Fester series is also in development, with the writers still needing to figure out the story, negotiate contracts with talent, and align schedules.
Peaky Blinders Spinoffs
Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw reported that two spinoffs of Peaky Blinders are in the works at Netflix. One of the spinoffs will be set in Boston during the middle of the 20th century, while the other series would focus on Polly, Tommy Shelby’s aunt and the matriarch of the criminal Shelby clan.
Peaky Blinders Movie
Creator Steven Knight confirmed the development of a Peaky Blinders movie back in 2021, with plans for a potential release in 2024. The original series, which first premiered on Netflix in 2013, follows the rise and fall of the Shelby crime family in Birmingham, England, in the aftermath of World War I. The show has six seasons, each covering a different period of time and historical events.
Main Characters and Historical Events
The main character, Thomas Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, leads the Peaky Blinders and faces various enemies and allies throughout the series. The show spans from 1919 to 1934, covering events such as the Irish War of Independence, the General Strike of 1926, the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and the rise of fascism in Europe.
As Netflix continues to expand its franchise era with new spinoff series and Peaky Blinders spinoffs, fans can anticipate more captivating stories and characters from these beloved shows.
