When Does The Mario Movie Come Out

Mario made the jump to the big screen yet again on Wednesday with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Although the beloved plumber is one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time, his movie appearances are more limited. This time around, he and his friends are getting the star treatment complete with a full ensemble cast of A-list celebrities paired with a stunningly animated feature film from Illumination, the same studio known for making the Minions movies.

The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 potential release date: When will Super Mario Bros 2 be released?

The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 still hasn’t been officially confirmed, but it’s almost definitely happening after the first movie made more than $1 billion worldwide. As of December 2023 though, its stars are still waiting for any official news. “It has been radio silence,” revealed Jack Black, who voiced Bowser. “The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business.” Talking of Bowser, his excellent song ‘Peaches’ has missed out on an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. That disappointment won’t have any impact on the sequel happening though. We just have to wait for news.

Back in June 2023, Chris Pratt noted that the sequel was on hold as a result of the strikes in Hollywood. With those strikes resolved, development could begin on the new movie and it could also be announced by Universal and Nintendo. We haven’t had that announcement as of January 2024, but it’ll be hard to imagine the sequel not happening. As we mentioned, the first movie took a lot of gold coins at the box office, grossing $1.36 billion worldwide following its release in April 2023. A sequel is all-but guaranteed, it’s just a matter of when we find out more.

The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 cast: Who would be coming back for Super Mario Bros 2?

The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 wouldn’t be the same without the Super Mario Bros themselves, so we would expect the return of Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi. Meanwhile, Anya Taylor-Joy, who voices Princess Peach, told Digital Spy in an exclusive interview how much she loved her character. This hopefully means we can count on her returning for a possible sequel, too.

Other cast members who would likely return include Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Of course, we can also expect one major newcomer for the potential sequel, as the post-credit scene teased the arrival of Yoshi. It’s unclear who will voice the beloved dinosaur yet, but we do get a little “yoshi” in the credit scene as he hatches.

The Super Mario Bros Movie ending explained: How does it set up Super Mario Bros 2?

The Super Mario Bros Movie is largely a self-contained origin story aimed at getting Mario and Luigi to live in the Mushroom Kingdom (which they are at the end of the movie). As mentioned, Yoshi is guaranteed to appear in a potential sequel — and there are plenty of Yoshi stories to draw from in the games. It’s more likely that the minds behind the first movie will create their own story for the sequel, though, with Yoshi potentially loose in Brooklyn. The film’s big finale also saw Bowser bested by Mario and Luigi before being shrunk to miniature size. A mid-credit scene shows Bowser captured in a cage in Peach’s castle in the Mushroom Kingdom, but we’re sure he’ll be back to cause more trouble in the sequel.

The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 trailer: Is there any Super Mario Bros 2 footage yet?

As a sequel has yet to be confirmed, any Super Mario Bros Movie 2 footage is far down the Rainbow Road for now. The Super Mario Bros Movie is available to buy from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store and other digital retailers. It is also available to watch on Sky Cinema in the UK.

Until The Super Mario Bros. Movie arrives on Netflix, you can still check out the movie on Peacock, where it’s streaming right now. The movie is also available to purchase digitally. You can do that with one of the links below.
