Super Mario 64 How To Beat Bowser

Super Mario 64 is a classic game that has stood the test of time, and one of the most iconic moments in the game is the battle against Bowser. Here’s a guide on how to beat Bowser in Super Mario 64, including tips and strategies for each of the three Bowser encounters.

Bowser 1

The first encounter with Bowser takes place on the first floor of the castle, behind the door with the big star on it. To defeat Bowser, there are two methods. The first method involves grabbing Bowser by the tail and spinning him around, then throwing him onto a bomb. The second method is a slower approach, where you can pick him up by the tail and slowly throw him towards the bombs. Once defeated, you will receive a big key that opens the door to the basement.

Bowser 2

The second encounter with Bowser is located in the basement, through the door with the big star. The method to defeat Bowser remains the same as the first encounter. Once defeated, you will receive another big key that opens the door straight in front of the entrance to the castle.

Bowser 3

The final encounter with Bowser takes place on the uppermost floor, up the “endless” staircase. You must have 70 stars to make it up to this level. To defeat Bowser this time, you need to throw him into three bombs. The slower strategy is not viable in this encounter, as once the floor falls, you can’t reach the bombs without throwing him. Once defeated, you will rescue the Princess.

Normal Route (No Red Coins)

When entering the Dark World, Mario will need to navigate through various obstacles and enemies to reach Bowser. This includes avoiding flames, jumping on moving platforms, and maneuvering through the level to reach the final showdown with Bowser.

Red Coin Route

For a more challenging route, players can opt to collect the eight red coins scattered throughout the level. This route involves additional detours and platforming challenges to collect all the red coins before facing Bowser.

Defeating Bowser

After Bowser gives his speech, the key to defeating him is to grab his tail, spin him around, and throw him into a bomb located on the side of the arena. Players need to be mindful of Bowser’s attacks, such as his fire breath, and use the environment to their advantage to defeat him. After successfully defeating Bowser, players will be rewarded with the key to progress further in the game.

What if the 2nd method does not work?

If the second method of defeating Bowser does not work, try placing Mario against the right of the staircase and repeat the method. It may take some practice to execute successfully.

Can you do the 2nd method on the Switch?

In the Shindou port of Super Mario 64, the second method involving backwards long jumps is patched. However, in the Nintendo Switch online version, it is still possible to perform this method.

Where can I find a 1-up outside the warp pipe?

Outside of the warp pipe where the battle against Bowser takes place, there’s a hidden 1-up behind a pillar. Players can use the camera to locate and grab this 1-up if they are running low on lives.

How can I obtain a secret star in the Bowser level?

To obtain a secret star, players need to collect all eight red coins scattered throughout the level. This presents an additional challenge and rewards players with a secret star upon completion.

Super Mario 64 offers a thrilling and nostalgic experience for players, and mastering the art of defeating Bowser is a significant accomplishment in the game. By following these strategies and tips, players can overcome the challenges posed by Bowser and progress through the game with confidence.
